Padmashri (Late) Mr. Inder SharmaA pioneer in the Indian Travel Industry, the late Mr. Inder Sharma joined the Tourism Industry in 1953 as a transfer assistant. In 1955, he was selected by SITA World Travel Inc., New York for a 6-month advanced training in Travel Management in the USA. After completing his training he returned to India and opened the first SITA office here in 1956.
He worked as the Regional Manager (India) from 1956 to 1963 post which he was promoted to the position of Vice President, Asia. In 1963, SITA World Travel Inc. was established as an Indian Private Limited Company and Mr. Sharma took charge as Managing Director. SITA India grew from strength to strength and by March 2000 it had over 23 pan-India offices and 9 international marketing offices.
With a Masters in Economics from Delhi University, (late) Mr. Inder Sharma married Dr. Aruna Sharma, a Medical Practitioner. They have two children, daughter Neeraj married to Kavi Ghei and son Arjun married to Jyotsana. They have two granddaughters – Shreya Ghei and Amaraah Sharma from Neeraj/Kavi and Arjun/Jyotsana respectively.
(Late) Mr. Inder Sharma along with his children Arjun and Neeraj conceived Select CITYWALK. Select CITYWALK is often regarded as the benchmark for modern retailing in Delhi and NCR region! Awards & Honors
- Awarded PADMA SHRI in 1990 by the Government of India for his contribution in the field of Tourism.
- Honored by the British Tourism Authority with the Holder of the Keys to Britain Award in 1980 and he is the only Indian to have been so awarded.
- Holder of the “Key to the City of Manila, 1983”. Awarded “Marketing Man of the Year 1983” by the Institute of Marketing & Management, Delhi.
- Inducted to the “Hall of Fame” in 1993 by the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO).
- Awarded the “The Agasthya Award” in 1993 by the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) for his achievements in Travel & Tourism.
- Silver Plaque honor by Rotary Club of Delhi Midtown for his service to the cause of Society and the Nation.
- Honored with “Life Membership” of PATA at the 44TH Annual Convention held in Auckland in April 1995
- Award from the Government of Sri Lanka in recognition of his efforts to promote tourism to Sri Lanka in 1998. Awarded the “Presidential Award” by PATA
- Honored with the “Friend of Nepal” award by Government of Nepal in 1998
- Conferred the Life Time Honorary Professorship of the Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi in 2003
- Conferred the Life Time Achievement Award of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry in 2003 by Hon’ble Shri P.S. Ramamohan Rao, the Governor of Tamil Nadu Awarded First Life Time Achievement Award Constituted jointly by TATA AIG and Indian Express in 2005

- Awarded Life Time Achievement Award 2007 by the World of Travel & Tourism.
- Life Time Tourism Award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Industry by Federation of India Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
